Message It is simply a matter of how far down the mod/maintenance ladder you are entering at.

Very few, as in a handful, of these cars are going to get $20k unless they have something particular about them that someone really wants/likes and is willing to coax a reluctant seller by overpaying for it.

I found the right car (for me) with an owner who was motivated to sell (twins due in weeks) and with moderate mods that were almost entirely inline with what I would have done. This is relatively rare, but it happens, and I didn't pay close to $20k and that was 9 years ago.

"Good" cars are going to be anywhere from $9k-10k-ish to maybe $16k-ish anything above that will be truly exceptional or a deluded seller....pretty much all of the above will require a minimum $1k in maintenance in the short term with the bulk of them requiring a few thousand in a combination of maintenance and desired mods or undoing previous stuff.....naturally you can mitigate that by being able to do the work yourself.
